One afternoon, during afternoon barn chores, Harbor noticed that one of the young chickens in our egg laying flock was acting funny.  "Peck Peck", as she came to be called, had one eye closed and was not moving around so well.  She seemed to be walking around in spirals and sitting most of the time.  Harbor immediately picked her up and isolated her in our "chick room," with her own food and water.  With some extra attention and care, Peck Peck was back with the flock without any sign of weakness!

When the rain started falling the way it did on Tuesday, I had to remove the fences that enclose our ducks.  This was their chance to pretend we have a pond on the farm!  Cedar joined them later in the day.

The blueberry season is coming to a close for us.  We have been raking blueberries since the beginning of August and have put most of them away in the freezers for making jams and preserves.  If you are not familiar with the wild low bush blueberries that grow very well in this down east region of Maine, I will start by saying they are smaller than what you find in grocery stores and very high in flavor.  We use a special rake to collect the berries, then must winnow them to get rid of any leaves and grasses that we...

One morning I was scything down the thistle in a corner of the pasture our calves are on right now, and I saw some feathers.  I put down the scythe and had a closer look.  What I thought was a dead chicken was a nesting hen.  I saw she had multiple eggs under her and I put the scythe away for the day.  A week later, Harbor spotted broken eggs and we are proud to say that she has hatched out 6 baby chicks!
