Letter from Darthia Farm / October 2006

October, 2007

This season is the best we have ever had at Darthia Farm. Sonja Heyck-Merlin and her partner, Nate, are leaving us in the spring to build their own farm.  We wish her well.  Thanks to Sonja and the apprentices, Rafe, Carina, Faye, and Will for keeping Darthia Farm a sustainable operation.

Darthia Farm has been certified by Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association for 29 years and we've seen many changes and hosted over 200 apprentices.  Many of them are now operating their own farms.  We have a CSA (community supported agriculture) program, a busy farm store, and do a farmers' market and a booth at the Common Ground Fair.  Our gardens are beautiful and productive and we'd be glad to show you around.

We have some great new items this year and a few changes on old favorites.  Look for our Shallots in a Box and the Beeswax Goodies.  Our old favorite is back - Potatoes in a Box.  And this year we decided to dye a lustrous grey fleece indigo.  Unfortunately the very strict regulations and paperwork required by the FDA makes it too difficult to sell any acidified foods like salsa, vinegar, and mustard.  You are able to order completely on line.

We hope you all have a wonderful, safe, and peaceful winter. Hope to see you at the farm next summer.

Bill, Cynthia, Sonja, Faye, Carina, Riley, Rafe, Will, and Lydia.
And Gus, Stefan (our Haflingers), Bob, Tim(our Fjords), and Lydia.
