Update from the Gardens

Most of the summers crops are starting to wind down as the season shifts towards autumn.  The potato plants in the potato patch have withered down to nothing, and the storage potatoes wait beneath the soil in their hilled beds.  They will wait for the time when the root cellar has gotten cold enough and we dig them up.  The last variety of sweet corn, sugar buns, is now ripe, and the rest of the corn stalks start to dry and turn brown.  The summer squash is slowing down and the cucumber vines have mostly given up.  We have canned our first batch of sauce from our field paste tomatoes and our first round of apple sauce from fallen apples around the farm.  We smile with the sunflowers as we fill up our freezers and cellar shelves with the bounty of this time.
