Update from the Gardens

Update from the Gardens

The season still seems to be holding itself back from becoming itself.  Luckily, we are getting glimpses of sun and spring and perhaps a true end to mud season.  Summer squash was bold enough to emerge from it's hill of compost to find the sun.  Last Thursday the weather held off just enough to get some of the first small seeded plantings in the garden.  Just as the rain started in the late afternoon I was planting beets and carrots and covering up the furrows full of seeds.  With the soil moist and starting to warm, there should be incredible germination in the next few days.

This photo, although it places the subject way in the distance, shows Frank Vela and I planting dry beans with the horse team of Star and Andy.  This is the first time I've used a traditional horse drawn "Corn and Bean Planter" for planting in the garden.  It worked like a charm and hopefully, the black beans, jacob's cattle, marfax, white, kidney, and vermont cranberry beans will grace our tables come autumn time.
