Update from the Gardens

As we were packing up and getting ready for the Common Ground Fair last Wednesday, we were at the same time preparing for what became the first widespread frost on the farm.  We covered up the outdoor tomatoes and covered up the onions.  Nothing that was covered was damaged.  The onions, which we have normally harvested by now, are still exhibiting upright behavior so today we went out and flopped all the tops over.  That way, the growth pattern ceases and the onion plant goes into dormancy, which is what we need for proper drying and storage.  We should be harvesting our onions and shallots by the end of the week.  With the mild and warm weather that followed the frost, more of the paste tomatoes ripened and we are making our first round of tomato sauce for our winter supply.
