Just as the new moon came, the season seemed to shift.  The full moon of June is sometimes referred to as the Strawberry Moon, and it is definitely bringing strawberry plants into bloom here.  Many other blossoms are showing themselves now, including the Fava Beans and Snap Peas.  The warmth has returned, along with Cedar Waxwings and millions of Black Flies.  With the soil finally warmed up, we were able to plant in our sweet corn in the garden down by the road.  You'll notice we've surrounded it with a fence system to keep the deer out.  We've been seeing...

Carrots - First carrots to come out of the ground in 2019! These were planting in one of our high tunnel Hoop Houses in early March and have thrived.  They are tender, orange, sweet, and have beautiful tops for using in salad dressings or soups. Beeswax Candles - Our friends over in Hope Maine make amazing candles from wax they harvest from bees they keep.  Come enjoy the smell inside the store!

Stewed rhubarb Growing up in Nova Scotia, rhubarb was the first thing out of the garden. My dad made stewed rhubarb every morning for breakfast at least through the end of June. Chop rhubarb. For every cup, add 2 Tbls sugar and a tsp of water. Slowly bring to simmer and cook until sugar is dissolved and rhubarb falls apart. It’s tart but delicious. The season still seems to be holding itself back from becoming itself.  Luckily, we are getting glimpses of sun and spring and perhaps a true end to mud season.  Summer squash was bold enough to emerge from it's hill of compost to find the sun.  Last Thursday the weather held off just enough to get some of the first small seeded plantings in the garden.  Just as the rain started in the late afternoon I was planting beets and carrots and covering up the furrows full of seeds.  With the soil moist and starting to warm, there should be incredible germination...
