Wow! Full moon of July mixed with multiple heavy rain events in one week mixed with warm sunny days equals everything is growing like crazy.  All the green beans, lettuce, beets, and carrots that I direct seeded at the end of last week are coming up with an authority only seen in mid summer.  As I check their growth, the scent of milk weed blossoms fills the air, as does their monarch butterfly partners.  On Sunday, after a day of 4 thunderstorms, as the sun was getting low in the sky, we witnessed a beautiful double rainbow in the eastern sky. ...

Basil Pesto - Our basil patch has finally filled in and our garlic scapes are peaking!  Come get your favorite pesto, or try it if you haven't already.  This first batch was a small one so supply may not last past the end of the day Wednesday, but we will make our next batch Monday.

Garlic scapes are strange looking edibles, indeed. About mid July, the garlic plants, which have been put in the previous fall, send out seed heads/scapes, which sap energy from the garlic plant if they are not removed. When we first moved here, over 40 years ago, the first year, we composted them, not realizing that they were a valuable veggie. They make a fabulous pesto by themselves, and certainly add to the basil pesto that we make. Their taste is a bit more muted and sweet than the garlic cloves that come later. Cultivation! Planting! We are getting some opportunities here and we are taking them as they come.  We were able to plant our Broccoli/ Cabbage/ Brussels/ Cauliflower seedings and direct seed another round of green beans, shelling beans, carrots, and beets.  It was a mad dash to do it all before the end of the day on Saturday, but we got it all in before the skies opened up and gave us a classic summer thunderstorm.  After that I have seen the first squash blossom, the first ripe cherry tomato, the first garlic scape emerging, and the first eggplants forming.  It...
