We finally got a bit of rain to help the gardens along.  Potato plants are perking up, green beans and dry beans are leafing out, summer squash has emerged and has true leaves, and the leafy greens like kale and chard are sizing up.  With the full moon and full sun exposure as we approach solstice time, our tomatoes are growing like crazy with lots of blossoms and baby fruit.  Even the strawberries have little green strawberries.  In our Road garden, we've got our winter squash and pumpkins planted and covered by floating row cover to protect the emerging plants from...

I don't know how some of these seeds do it.  Dry beans like Marfax and Jacob's Cattle, and Summer Squash like Costata Romanesca have germinated and emerged strong towards the sunlight without more that a 3 minute shower of rain.  Late, unexpected frost has killed off some eggplant that I had interplanted with the potatoes and also damaged a bunch of basil seedlings that were just about ready to be transplanted to the gardens.  These basil plants that were stripped of all leaves and reduced to a sad looking stalk, have since started to put out new lateral growth and...

This has been an interesting spring to follow in the gardens.  An early warm streak in March allowed us to get an extra early planting germinating in one of the high tunnel greenhouses.  A consistantly cool April favored those plantings and allowed for garden prep throughout the farm, but a slow start to outdoor plantings.  The recent hot streak caused bolting and stress in early plantings of arugula and salad greens, bringing them to an end.  There will likely be a gap in harvest between the end of early greens and the coming of outdoor garden crops.
